Tumeric Paste for Inflammation

Turmeric and curcumin together have recently been discovered to dramatically help inflammation and healing. Research is continuing to be done on this spice combination but initially the reports are good for people and for dogs (it's not clear whether it causes toxicity in cats. It's best to ask your vet). The pills we buy for ourselves are too strong for animals so it's best to make your own paste.

This recipe, created by Dr. Doug English, an Australian veterinarian, is a good way to safely add turmeric into your dog's diet.

The Golden Paste

  • 1/2 cup (125 mls/60gms) turmeric powder

  • 1 cup water (250 mls) PLUS 1 cup water in reserve, if needed

  • 1/3 cup (70 mls) Raw/Cold Pressed/Unrefined Coconut/Flaxseed-Linseed Oil, Virgin/Extra Virgin Olive Oil

  • 2-3 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Place turmeric and water in a pan, stirring over low heat until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add additional water along the way.

Add the freshly ground pepper and oil AT THE END of cooking. Stir well (a whisk is ideal) to incorporate the oil and allow to cool.

The Golden Paste will keep for 2 weeks, refrigerated

Freeze a portion if you think you have too much to use within two weeks. Dr. English recommends a starting dose of 1/4 teaspoon two to three times daily. Just add to your dog’s food! (I suggest you start at a 1/4 teaspoon once a day for a few days to see how your dog responds.)

Please note: Side effects are rare but can affect your dog if he/she has any of the following issues. Please check with your veterinarian before using turmeric.

  • bleeding disorders

  • stomach ulcers

  • gallbladder stones

  • bile duct obstruction

  • diabetes
